Getting Started - Eligibility

How Ohio Defines Disability

  1. It is the result of a mental or physical impairment or both;
  2. It occurs before age 22;
  3. It is likely to continue indefinitely;
  4. It reflects the person’ needs for specialized services and/or treatments
  5. For children under three, it results in at least one developmental delay or an established risk
  6. For children between three and six, it results in at least 2 developmental delays or an established risk
  7. For a person age 6 or older,It results in substantial functional limitation in three or more of the following areas:
    • Self-care (the ability to feed, bathe, dress yourself)
    • Self-direction (the ability to make decisions in your life that affect your present & future)
    • Economic self-sufficiency (the ability to earn enough money to meet your needs)
    • Independent living (the ability to live alone without assistance)
    • Learning (the ability to learn new information or skills)
    • Receptive and expressive language (the ability to hear and understand speech and the ability to speak and express ideas)
    • Mobility (the ability to move both small and larger motor muscles to help you move and walk)
